Inbound Students General Information and Rules

 

Note:

            Every student selected to participate in the Youth Exchange Program must at all times remember that he/she is an Ambassador of his/her country and must therefore conduct him/herself with intelligence, common sense and dignity, consistent with the privilege of  being a Rotary International Exchange Student.

 

Students must agree to the following

 

(1)            To become familiar with and understand clearly the aims and objects of Rotary International, its organization, structure, purpose, ideals and service record.

 

(2)            To travel in District 4510 the student has to be in the company of host family or Rotarians. Are unauthorized every travels out of District 4510  without official arrangements or sponsoring by Youth Exchange Committee. Some cases with the approval of the Chairman can be allowed, specially when the students are in the company of host family or host Rotarians with Rotary sponsor club allowance, on those cases the responsible has to early advise where they are going and when will return.

 

(3)            Students are to forward a written report to the District Chairman by Sep. 30, Dec. 31, Mar. 31 and June 30. Copies of sponsored students reports will be made available to your sponsoring club and copies of hosted students report may be sent to their sponsoring district.

 

(4)            Hosting a student in the responsibility of the hosting club. In case of difficulties, one should consult with the club youth exchange counselor, club president, or the district chairman hosting you.

 

(5)            The student is required to maintain a US$300,00 revolving fund provided by the student’s parents. This is to be used for emergencies. A monthly allowance for the students will be arranged by the host club to help cover the cost of postage and small incidentals.

 

(6)            The student is expected to become an integral member of your host family, assuming duties and responsibilities normal for a person of his/her age.

 

(7)            Choose friends slowly and wisely, as there will be many social opportunities. You do not have to accept the first invitation. Trust the host family and your club counselor to aid you in developing a respectable circle of friends.

 

(8)            Host families and clubs are responsible for you socially, spiritually and physically. The students should respect their wishes and requests. Each society has its own work customs and ways of doing things. The students must be flexible and adaptable. Some guidance and restrictions are to be expected and advisable.

 

(9)            Smoking is discouraged. You are expected to be abiding by host home rules and local by laws, which may not allow smoking.

 

(10)        Students should know the essentials of the language of the host country, upon arrival in the host country; you are expected to work diligently to learn the language quickly.

 

(11)        The student must be obeying the laws of each country that he/she is in. He/she can expect no assistance from the government if laws are violated.

 

(12)        The student is required to enroll at the high school selected by the host club, attend classes full time, seriously attempt to achieve good grades, and participate fully in all school activities during your stay in the host country.

 

(13)        During the year abroad, the student is expected to attend the Rotary and Youth Exchange functions as directed by the host club and district chairman. These functions come first, ahead of other social activities and even school attendance.

 

(14)        The student is expected to address Rotary clubs, youth and school groups while being hosted and upon your return home. One should prepare a slide presentation of your home/host country.

 

(15)        The student is an “ambassador” for his/her home country and must, at all times, behave in a manner which will reflect credit upon his/herself, family and country.

 

(16)        You must at all times abide by the four “Ds” rules, namely.

(a)           Absolutely no drugs will be used, expect for valid medical reasons, and as prescribed by a physician. No excuse will be accepted.

(b)          The student is not to drive a motor vehicle of any kind.

(c)           Dating will not be permitted. Sexual involvement will not be tolerated – students will be sent home.

(d)          Absolutely no drinking of alcoholic beverages, except:

(I)              When the student is in the physical presence of his/her host parents in their home, or a Rotarian who is specifically responsible for the student at that time in his/her home, and the circumstances for drinking are completely legal, and the student wishes to drink, and it is done in extreme moderation.

(II)             There is to be absolutely no drinking among exchange students grouped together. No excuse will be accepted.

 

(17)        Students are to refrain from seeking or obtain permanent or full time employment while under the program. In exceptional cases, with the consent and approval of the district chairman, temporary part-time employment may be had during the long vacation period, subject always to the law and the land governing employment in these circumstances.

 

(18)        The student will return home upon the completion of the stay in the host country, and in no circumstances, attempt to extend the stay beyond the 12 month period. With permission of the natural parents, and at their cost, the journey on the return trip may be broken for extended travel provided that Rotary will have no obligation to/for the student during the said travel.

 

(19)        Students are to obey all the rules and respect all the guidelines in keeping with the spirit of the program.

 

It should be emphasized that the district Youth Exchange Committee has absolutely no reservation about removing any student from the program sending said student home at his/her own expense, if the student does not adhere to the general intent and conditions of the program ad particularly rule number 18.
